🧪 Special casesHow to remove urine stains & odor

Yellow rings and ammonia smell · dilute, then break down with enzymes

Urine is almost clear when fresh, but as it dries it leaves a yellow ring and a sour smell. Clothes and bedding can simply be washed, but for things you can't wash whole, like a mattress, the key is to draw out and dilute the urine that has soaked in.

🔬 Why this order works

Most of what's in urine dissolves in water, so it comes out well if rinsed right away. But once it dries, the remaining components break down and the ammonia smell gets stronger, and what's left deep in the fibers doesn't come out easily with water alone. An enzyme cleaner breaks down these odor compounds, which works better than masking them with fragrance.

🧺 Step by step

Tap a step when it's done to tick it off.

👕 By fabric

⚪ White cotton & linen

Oxygen bleach removes both the yellow and the smell. Use chlorine bleach only after all the urine has been rinsed out.

🎨 Colors & synthetics

Soak in enzyme detergent and wash, then treat any yellow with a color-safe oxygen bleach. Test on the inside first.

🧶 Wool, silk & cashmere

Blot and rinse with cold water, and use only a neutral wool detergent. If the smell remains, take it to a dry cleaner.

🚫 Don't

  • Pouring chlorine bleach directly on urine — combined with the ammonia it can produce an irritating gas.
  • Only masking the smell with air freshener or fabric softener — the residue stays and the smell returns on humid days.
  • Pouring lots of water on a mattress — it soaks deep inside, won't dry, and grows mold.

⏳ If it has already dried

For old yellow marks, soak for a few hours in water with enzyme detergent, wash, and finish with oxygen bleach. On a mattress, the smell only fades after several rounds of enzyme cleaner, and the yellow ring may remain.

💡 Tip

If your child is at the bedwetting stage, put on a waterproof mattress protector. Stopping it from soaking into the mattress is by far the easiest approach.

❓ Common questions

There's urine on the mattress. What should I do?

Fold a dry towel into layers and press down firmly to draw it out. Mist on a little cold water with a spray bottle to dilute it, then press again to absorb it, and repeat a few times. Spray on an enzyme cleaner as the label directs, leave it, then blot it up, and keep air moving until it's completely dry all the way through. Once it's dry, sprinkle on baking soda and vacuum it up to reduce the smell.

Can I use vinegar and water?

Dabbing with vinegar diluted in water is a common method too. But never mix it with chlorine bleach, and don't use the two one after the other on the same spot either.
